Parent Training

CAS currently provides a parent training course that is an individualized training tailored to each family served. It is a stand-alone program that is designed for the primary caregivers of children between the ages of 3 and 14 years. In addition, CAS provides parent training as a portion of the FIRST, LAST and BIS programs.

Training includes effective teaching methodologies based on identified alternative replacement skills and behavior problem management. CAS provides training in the following areas:

  • Further the parents understanding of their child’s specific needs by identifying function(s) of behaviors and teaching appropriate replacement skills.
  • Learn to identify, breakdown, and teach a skill in one or more of the following areas: Get ready to learn skills, self-help skills, play/leisure skills, communication skills and safety skills.
  • Learn to reward their child effectively in order to reinforce desired behaviors and skills.
  • Learn to troubleshoot and modify goals to maintain progress.
  • Learn to identify behavior problems, take baseline data, analyze data, identify behavior functions, encourage alternative behaviors, and choose an effective consequence.
  • How to prepare their environment to support independence and reduce the occurrence of challenging behaviors.
  • How to support their child’s engagement and language development using a multi-modal approach (i.e., verbal language, gestures, sign language, picture exchange and visual supports) if needed.
  • How to teach the child new skills.

The Parent Training Program is based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis and utilizes a positive programming philosophy, targeting the development and teaching of skills to replace problematic behaviors.
